FAQ's of Volunteering for I can
I CAN the Way I AM is back!
Don’t miss your chance to be a parent volunteer with this program returning OCTOBER 2018
WHO: The I CAN the Way I AM program is hoping to grow so that our preschool students are involved with this important effort. This growth means more volunteers are needed! Please consider earning your parent volunteer hours during the year with the I CAN the Way I AM program.
WHAT: I CAN the Way I AM is designed to promote awareness about people with disabilities. During the month of October, our preschool-8th grade students will engage in hands-on simulations and hear related speakers based on a core belief that all children are kind and caring.
WHEN: Volunteers can sign up to help with one grade level or multiple grades. By signing up you are committing to one September evening of parent volunteer training, which will last about 1-2 hours.
o After the training you will feel prepared and confident about entering the classroom for the simulation day. The simulation day will last one hour per homeroom. If a grade level has 3 homerooms you can plan on 3 hours of volunteer time for that one simulation day in October.
o Finally, you could return to school to hear and assist with the assigned speaker who will reinforce the messages presented during the simulation day.
o Volunteering for one grade level could equal 7 Parent Volunteer HOURS!
WHERE: Parent volunteers will begin their service at a parent training night one evening in September and will complete their work in the classroom directly engaging with our students.
WHY: In general, we are fearful of things we do not understand and we may compensate by laughing or making fun of something we perceive as different. Sometimes the greatest barriers to inclusion of others are the unseen barriers that exist in our own attitudes. I CAN the Way I AM strives to break down these barriers.
